What we'll do

Swim with the biggest fish in the world in the best location in the world!

Every year, between March and July, the Ningaloo Reef hosts up to 600 whale sharks, making this one of the best places in the world to spot these gentle giants in the wild. And for over 30 years, Kings Ningaloo Reef Tours have been the best operators in the region, delivering 5-star comfort while allowing guests to get up close to Whale Sharks, Manta Rays, Spinner Dolphins, Dugongs, Turtles and a myriad of other amazing marine life.

Your day aboard the luxury vessel, the "Magellan" starts with some snorkelling in the lagoon or outer reef, which is home to hundreds of species of fish. Overhead, the spotter plane will look for whale sharks. Once found, you'll be collected and positioned in the water so that the whale sharks will swim by you, allowing you to swim alongside the shark once it has passed. Whale sharks are the only marine creature in the world that allow such a close and prolonged, wild interaction without being disturbed or changing course. It feels as though they are choosing to swim with you!

With a professional photographer on hand, the quality of your captured memories will be second to none. Once you're all snorkelled out, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch onboard. There's still time for one more snorkel on another coral garden inside the lagoon - if you have the energy! Then it is time to farewell your friendly crew and start reminiscing about your amazing day on the reef!

      Frequently asked questions

      • What should I bring? Hat, sunscreen, swimwear, a beach towel, a jacket/jumper or spare change of clothes are recommended in the cooler months (eg June and July). We recommend seasick medication if you experience motion sickness.
      • Is lunch included? Lunch is included on this tour and is buffet style, featuring salads, meats, breads and more. You definitely won't go hungry! Vegetarian and vegan options are available - please inform us of any dietary requirements when booking.
      • Where do we start? You will be picked up from your accommodation. Please message us when booking with your accommodation details.
      • Where do we finish? You will be returned to your accommodation at the end of the day.
      • When do we start and finish? The tour starts at 8:00 am and finishes at approximately 4:00 pm.
      • What days does the tour operate? Tours operate most days during March and July. Check the calendar for availability.
      • How far in advance should I book? To avoid disappointment we do recommend booking at least 2 weeks in advance. School holiday periods in April and July can book out months in advance so if travelling to Ningaloo during these times then please book early! We also suggest booking your whale shark tour earlier in your stay in Exmouth rather than later. This will offer you some flexibility if you don't see a whale shark and qualify for the Whale Shark Sighting Guarantee (April – July).
      • Who can come? All ages are welcome.
      • What if I'm not confident in the water? Your experienced professional guides are able to put even the most nervous swimmer at ease. They are able to offer snorkel tuition during the reef snorkels and can even hold your hand as they guide you through the experience. On board, you have a choice of swim vests, pool noodles and a safety tube for additional flotation and reassurance. If you aren’t confident or would like some additional tuition please let us know when booking so we can ensure you make the most of your Ningaloo Reef Whale Shark Snorkelling Adventure.
      • Am I guaranteed to see whale sharks? We can't guarantee that you'll see whale sharks as they are wild animals, but your guides will do their absolute best to find some for you. Ningaloo Reef currently holds the world’s highest interaction rate of whale shark numbers and accessibility, boasting a 97% interaction rate in 2016, 94% rate in 2017 and 97% in 2018. So the chances are very high that you will see a whale shark. There is also the whale shark sighting guarantee (see next question).
      • What if I don't see whale sharks? Kings has a "Whale Shark Sighting Guarantee" for all tours between April and July. So if you come out on one of these tours and do not see a whale shark they will offer you the next available tour for free as a second chance to do so. If you are not available for this repeat tour a partial refund can be provided. Please note that coming on a second tour is subject to availability.
