About your guides

Why Not Bus is a Perth-based, Australian owned-and-operated small tour company. Their mission is to give young travellers the complete Western Australia experience with tours that feel more like a road trip with new friends.

Why Not Bus's guides are passionate, young guys who just love to go camping, show people the outdoors and how to have a great time in Western Australia.

DAY 1: Perth to the Pinnacles

Your Perth to Broome tour starts with a trip to the local shops to stock up on food for your delicious meals. You'll then head north and enjoy impressive views of the Indian Ocean drive before arriving at the Pinnacles Dessert.

Wandering around the Pinnacles, you'll feel like you're exploring another world, with thousands of limestone spires that have been formed over millions of years dotting the landscape. Afterwards, it is just a short drive the picturesque beachside campsite where the group will kick back for the night. Watch the sunset with your new mates and enjoy a beer!

DAY 2: Pinnacles, Geraldton, Pink Lake & Lucky Bay

Sleep off your hangover or have an early morning swim then hit the road around 9:30 am. Before lunch, you'll check out the Geraldton foreshore and museums then head to the spectacular Pink Lake for some rad photo ops!

The campsite tonight is at the scenic Lucky Bay. Walk the sand dunes or swim as the sun goes down. There is plenty of space at the campsite so time to turn the music up and let your hair down for the night.

    DAY 3: Kalbarri National Park

Hit the road and see the scenic Kalbarri Cliffs before a quick swim and cold shower at the river mouth. Then explore the amazing Kalbarri National Park with a few hours of hiking to Nature’s Window and the Z Bend. In the late afternoon, it is time to hit the road to our overnight stop by the river.

DAY 4: Shark Bay and Monkey Mia

This morning you'll get to visit the World Heritage-listed site of Shark Bay. Check out Shell Beach and relax and swim in the crystal clear water. After lunch, you'll visit the town of Denham followed by a stop at the Lagoon for a game of ultimate frisbee or cricket (group dependant).

It’s now time for a bit of luxury as we set up camp at the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort. After dinner and an amazing sunset, you can head down to the jetty and spot wildlife with your torch or kick back on the grass around the campsite.

DAY 5: Monkey Mia to Carnarvon

Wake up and walk 50 metres down to the water’s edge. It’s time to meet the famous Monkey Mia Dolphins! If you are lucky you will get to feed Flipper his scaly breakfast!

You'll have a few hours to explore, swim or rent a kayak. We hit the road around lunchtime and travel to Carnarvon to resupply. The campsite is a short drive north of here where we will settle in for the night.

    DAY 6: Coral Bay

We roll into Coral Bay mid-morning and set up camp. There are now essentially two free days to explore, snorkel the amazing reef or just sit with your new friends on the beach and enjoy this special place. There are also optional fishing charter tours, diving tours, manta ray tours and whale shark tours that you can sign-up at the time.

Usually, things will kick off pretty early and by late afternoon everyone is ready to blow off some steam and have some drinks. Some drinking games may be played as well. The campsite is a 5-minute walk from the beach and everything else in town. You will fall in love with this place the moment you arrive!

    DAY 7: Coral Bay

Another day in beautiful Coral Bay! Today you can really see the reef at its finest, only meters from the beach are huge coral formations and large fish.If you are lucky you might swim alongside a turtle or friendly reef shark! There are also optional fishing charter tours, diving tours, manta ray tours and whale shark tours that you can sign-up at the time.

    DAY 8: Exmouth

Today you'll head north to Exmouth. With the right weather conditions, we can hit the Exmouth town beach and enjoy some water sports. Take a jetski out and see dolphins and whales (in season), go tubing behind the jetskis for a wild adrenaline rush or just relax on the beach.

In the afternoon we have the option to rent a surfboard or do a lesson. Your campsite tonight will vary depending on what the group feels like - it might be in town or it could be by the beach.

DAY 9: Cape Range National Park, Whale Sharks & Ningaloo Reef

Today you'll travel to the Cape Range National Park and hike Mandu Mandu Gorge.

In the afternoon, you'll have the chance to snorkel at the beautiful (and appropriately named) Turquoise Bay. This spot is known as one of Western Australia's best beaches. In the evening you can watch the sunset at the historic Vlaming Lighthouse. There is also the option to do a whale shark tour here (in season).

DAY 10: Exmouth to Tom Price

Today the group will travel inland to the red-earthed heart of the Pilbara. Keep an eye out the window for wildlife and maybe even a cheeky dingo. This evening you'll check into Karijini Eco Retreat and stay in Glamping Tents with Bunks.

    DAY 11: Karijini National Park

Today you'll explore Knox Gorge, Hancock Gorge and hike down into Kermits Pool for a refreshing swim. Later you'll walk the Weano Gorge and visit Handrail Pool. The group may also check out Oxers, Junction Pool and Jofre Lookouts. So much to see today!

    DAY 12: Karijini National Park

Wake up and start your day by heading to Dales Gorge. Here you'll be able to swim at the picturesque Fern Pool. Then the group will check out Fortesque Falls.

Afterwards, it is time for another short hike (1.5 km) through Dales Gorge to Circular Pool for a swim. This afternoon you'll be dropped off to take the Integrity Coach bus to Port Headland. You'll have to wait for a few hours for the next bus, but don't worry - there's always other guests who are doing exactly the same! At 1:30 am the Integrity Coach will roll into town and you will travel overnight to Broome.

    DAY 13: Broome

Catch up on some sleep on the coach and arrive in the beautiful Broome by 8:15 am. Make sure you've booked your accommodation for Broome! (message us for recommendations).

      Frequently asked questions

      • What should I bring? Backpack (no large suitcases), hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries, torch, towel, pillow, sleeping bag, phone or camera, at least 2L water bottle, comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. The temperature really drops in the outback in the evenings (even in summer) so we recommend bringing a jacket, and plenty of warm clothing in the colder months (May to September). Sleeping bags are available for hire. Flynets are recommended but also available for purchase along the way.
      • What food is on the menu? This isn't your standard boring backpacker tour food! The group will all shop together on the first day so you can have a say in what you eat on this tour (to an extent). At the beginning of each trip, each guest will put in $60 into a ‘food fund’. This is then used to buy ingredients that make up the delicious feasts you'll eat along the way. On average you can expect to spend between $5 to $10 a day for food.
      • When and where do we start? Your tour starts at 9:30 am in Perth, with pick-up from Billabong Backpackers Hostel, Highgate. If you are staying at another hostel or accommodation, make sure to get yourself there in time.
      • When and where do we finish? Tours finish in Broome on Day 13 at approximately 8:15 am. Please note that on Day 12 you will catch an Integrity Coach bus to Broome, and not all the tour group will be continuing with you.
      • What days does the tour depart? Tours depart on specific dates, see the calendar above for 2019 dates.
      • Do I need a sleeping bag? Yes, you will need a sleeping bag for this tour. Sleeping bags are available for hire, please let us know when booking if you require one.
      • What do we sleep in? There is a range of accommodation on this tour (see inclusions section above), but most nights you will be camping in tents. Tents can accommodate 2 people. There is a cleaning/repair fee of $10 per person for the tents.
      • Who can come? All ages are welcome. Most guests are between 18 years and 30 years old, but fun-loving and easy-going guests over 30 will have a great time.
      • How fit do you have to be to do the hikes? A moderate level of fitness is required for the hikes. Sometimes there are also shorter options available if you feel you can’t do the big walks.
      • Do you cater for specific diets? Yes, please contact us when booking if you have any specific dietary needs.
      • Can I bring alcohol? Yes, yes you can. In fact we recommend it.
      • Is this tour safe? Yes, you'll always going to be in good, safe hands on this tour with your expert guides. We do always recommend purchasing travel insurance, but you don't have anything in particular to be worried about!
      • Are there any dangerous animals when you're camping? Well, this is Australia, so we have plenty of dangerous animals, but all the campsites are safe. Remember, these animals are generally more afraid of you than you are of them.
      • Will I have to help out? Yes. All tours are participation style tours where the group helps with food preparation, collecting firewood and some other tasks. This provides you with the opportunity to bond with other travellers and have fun while enjoying the beauty of Australian camping. So if you're a princess, or don't like helping out, this probably isn't the tour for you!

It was an absolutely awesome trip! Our tour guides Dylan and Cam did an absolutely amazing job:-) We saw so many beautiful places and everyone was so friendly! I had a really good time and can only recommend this tour:-)

          Best road trip

I couldnt recommend this more! Its definitely the best way to travel the west coast! You get the full WA experience stopping in breath taking places! It doesnt feel like a bus tour more like one big happy family traveling up the coast ! I had the most amazing time and Ive come away with some friends for life and amazing memories ! My WhyNotBus experience was by far my highlight of my time in Australia and I couldnt thank Dylan enough for making this trip so special !

Great way to see the West Coast

First of all massive shout out to Dylan was being an epic drive. The tour stops at all of the highlights on the west coast whilst meeting some incredible people along the way. Had the most incredible time with a cool bunch of people, lots of banter and plenty of booze. If you want a cruiser trip up the west coast then this is the tour for you!

Bad organisation but people made it fun

Firstly, we did not glamp in Karijini (which was advertised) and we stayed at a camp site in Tom Price, an hour and a half away from Karijini. We got no refunds even though the campsite was much cheaper than the eco resort we were initially supposed to stay at. Moreover, no one told us that we aren't glamping - I reckon they were hoping we won't notice? Second, not all campsites we stayed at had a toilet. Not a huge problem, accept that it specially says on their website that all campsites will be equipped with toilets. Don't advertise it if it is not true. Thirdly, I was annoyed that they are selling the trip as a roadtrip with a minibus for small group of people and then first day I realise that there are actually two busses and 46 people? Not cool. One of the reasons I decided to do the tour was that I thought it wouldn't be a massive thing. All the promo photos and instagram photos only included 1 bus, there was no indication that I'd be travelling with almost 50 people. Fourthly, when we were dropped off to take the Integrity bus it turned out that there weren't enough tickets purchased (16 instead of 19). Thankfully there was enough space on the bus. That being said - the trip is an amazing way to see West Coast. You meet cool people, see a lot and experience Australia in a very interesting and exciting way. Cam and Dylan were great drivers. It was a perfect mix of chilling - partying - sightseeing. Had enough free time and lots of fun. I would still do it again and recommend it to people. I think that once organisational aspects of the tour improve, the trip will be amazing. It is a great way to see WA, which is beautiful and seriously underrated.
