DAY 1: ALICE SPRINGS TO ULURU
You'll be picked up around at around 6:00 am from your Alice Springs accommodation and begin your outback journey of a lifetime! The next 6 hours are spent driving to Uluru, with breaks along the way. Once at Uluru, you'll visit the Camel Farm where you can have a free camel ride. Other passengers who arrive into Ayers Rock Airport are picked up during this time, then you head to the Cultural Centre for an insight into the flora, fauna and to learn about the local Aboriginal people.
Afterwards, your guide will take you on a short guided interpretive walk at the base of Uluru. You'll then head off to watch the spectacular Uluru sunset while enjoying a glass of sparkling wine with some snacks. Then it’s back to our camp to enjoy a hearty meal and a hot shower and a night under the stars. If you want to see the Field of Lights, a bus will come to collect you after dinner. Please contact us when you book if you would like to do this (additional cost of $43).
DAY 2: KATA TJUTA & KINGS CREEK
You'll wake early and have breakfast, before heading off to watch the sunrise over Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Afterwards, you'll visit Kata Tjuta for a walk through the Valley of the Winds. This walk takes approximately 3 hours and the views from the valley are amazing. After lunch back at the Uluru campsite (perhaps camel burgers), you'll board the bus and travel to Kings Creek Station. This is approximately a 4-hour drive, with stops included and beautiful views of the George Gill Range along the way.
At Kings Creek Station, you'll settle into your new campsite and have a chance to view the sunset again. Tonight you'll enjoy an outback BBQ dinner and laughs around the campfire under the incredible outback sky. Later, get into your swags for another perfect view of the stars.
DAY 3: KINGS CANYON & CURTIN SPRINGS
Another early start today, then after breakfast you'll travel to Kings Canyon and start the spectacular Kings Canyon rim walk. The group will visit both the North and South walls of Kings Canyon, stop for an apple in The Garden of Eden, and visit the Natural Amphitheatre. It’s then back to Kings Creek Station where you have the option of helicopter or quad bike ride (at your expense). You then head off to a private bush camp at Curtin Springs Station where you can take in sunset views of Mt Conner and enjoy your last night under the outback stars.
DAY 4: KINGS CANYON & AYERS ROCK AIRPORT
It’s a relaxed start to the day with a later sleep before you enjoy a tasty breakfast. You will then make one last photo stop before leaving the tour at the airport at around 10:00 am.
Frequently asked questions
What should I bring? Backpack (no large suitcases), hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, toiletries, towel, pillow, sleeping bag, phone or camera, at least 2L water bottle, comfortable clothing and good walking shoes. The temperature really drops in the outback in the evenings (even in summer) so we recommend bringing a jacket, and plenty of warm clothing in the colder months (May to September). Sleeping bags are available for hire for $20, please let us know when booking if you require one. Flynets are recommended but also available for purchase at the Camel Farm on Day 1.
How cold does it get at night? In winter (June to August) temperatures can drop to 0 degrees celsius. In summer (December to February) it is usually around 20 degrees celsius at night. Please check weather forecasts before the tour so you can bring appropriate clothing for the conditions.
What food is on the menu? This isn't your standard boring backpacker tour food! Expect meals to include burritos, Aussie BBQs (kangaroo meat, sausages and salads), camel burgers, bacon & eggs, cold meats & salad rolls and a range of cereals for breakfast.
Where do we start? You'll be collected from your accommodation in Alice Springs or picked up from Ayers Rock Airport.
Where do we finish? Tours finish in Uluru. Free transfers to Alice Springs are available, please let us know when booking if you require this.
When do we start and finish? The tour starts in Alice Springs or Uluru on Day 1 with pick-up at 6:00 or 1:00 pm respectively. The tour finishes in Uluru on Day 4 at 10:00 am.
What days does the tour depart? Tours depart on every day of the week except Mondays and Fridays, all year round.
What is a swag? A swag is a bedroll made of canvas with a mattress inside. You can put your sleeping bag inside and zip it up and have a perfect view of the stars. It is warm, water-proof and the best way to camp!
Do I need a sleeping bag? Yes, it is a health regulation requirement to have a sleep sheet or sleeping bag inside your swag. It will also keep you warmer at night. Sleeping bags are available for hire for $20, please let us know when booking if you require one.
Who can come? All ages are welcome. Most guests are between 18 years and 35 years old, but fun-loving and easy-going guests over 40 will have a great time, and even families occasionally join the tours.
How fit do you have to be to do the hikes? A moderate level of fitness is required for the hikes. There are 3 hikes in total. The Uluru base walk is easy and flat, the Valley of the Winds hike at Kata Tjuta involves some uphill sections and is roughly a 3-hour return hike, and the Kings Canyon Rim Walk takes 3 - 4 hours with breaks included. The start of the Kings Canyon hike is the most strenuous, with approximately 500 steps to climb. After that, the hike is relatively easy. There are also shorter options available if you feel you can’t do the big walks.
Do you cater for specific diets? The tour can cater for vegetarians, vegans, gluten free and lactose intolerant passengers. Please contact us when booking if you have any specific dietary needs.
Can I bring alcohol? Yes, yes you can. Often your guides will provide some cheap cans of beer that you can purchase in the evening at the campsite.
Is this tour safe? Yes, you'll always going to be in good, safe hands on this tour with your expert guides. We do always recommend purchasing travel insurance, but you don't have anything in particular to be worried about!
Are there any dangerous animals when you're camping? Dingoes are known to wander around the campsites, however, they are generally more afraid of you than you are of them. Just make sure not to leave your shoes out of your swag and you'll be fine (dingoes, like all dogs, love smelly shoes).
Can I climb Uluru? This is not encouraged as it is not respectful to the customs and beliefs of the local Aboriginal people, the Anangu. From late October 2019, climbing Uluru will be prohibited.
Will I have to help out? Yes. All tours are participation style tours where the group helps with food preparation, collecting firewood and some other tasks. This provides you with the opportunity to bond with other travellers and have fun while enjoying the beauty of the Australian outback. So if you're a princess, or don't like helping out, this probably isn't the tour for you!
